Robert mentioned in the introduction of this course: When I started to get in touch with Tarot in the 1980s, the first deck I had was the Marseille Tarot, and the second deck was the Waite & Smith Tarot. Although the Waite & Smith Tarot is full of mysterious imagery, and it is this kind of card that made Tarot popular all over the world, it is obvious that the older French Marseille Tarot is the model that inspired Waite & Smith. From the beginning of my contact with Tarot, I wanted to know how the first artist who created these cards thought of their creations. Cards marked with the Marseille Tarot are not necessarily from Marseille, or even always from France. Some were published in Switzerland or northern Italy with French titles. The Marseilles deck is not the only variation of the Tarot, nor did the Tarot originate in France. It originated in Italy when a set of cards called the Jokers, representing a mystical procession, was added to the regular four suits of playing cards. There are several variations of this deck, but the most recent evidence suggests that the Marseilles deck originated in Florence in the mid-15th century. In August 1987, I was working on an alchemical image that symbolized the Philosopher’s Stone, the mysterious object of the alchemical Magnum Opus (Great Work). The Philosopher’s Stone is composed of a spiritual essence known as the World Soul (Anima Mundi). In a flash of inspiration, I saw that the World card of the Tarot depicted the same essence, and I realized that it had a symbolic connection to the alchemical image. This image seemed to open a secret door in my mind, and in an instant, I saw that the alchemical works and the stories on the Tarot deck were interchangeable. This was just the beginning of a process that would last several years. The result of this insight and effort was the Alchemical Tarot, which was first published by Thorsons in 1995 and has now become world famous with five further editions published by me. However, I realised that the Tarot was not meant to be used for alchemy. The reason I was able to connect the cards to the Great Working was because they were all based on ancient mystical philosophy, namely Hermetic philosophy. Although I am best known for creating the Alchemical Tarot, I have always longed to create a version of the Tarot of Marseilles that would connect it to its Hermetic roots. The Alchemical Tarot of Marseilles is that deck. Each trump in the deck represents my reinterpretation of the Marseilles deck. Each trump contains a quote that illustrates its meaning from Hermetic texts, and each trump also displays a symbol that represents its process in alchemical works. Most modern Tarot readers have learned how to read the cards while using the Waite & Smith Tarot or a deck based on it, with the images on the cards being used to assist in the reading. Because the traditional Marseille deck only shows the suit symbols repeated on the small deck, this creates a barrier for modern readers who want to use traditional decks. However, it is the traditional Tarot deck, and even the regular four suit decks, that have been used for divination for centuries. When studying the history of cartomancy, we can find that there are divination techniques that combine number symbols with suit symbols in the process of cartomancy. The traditional Tarot deck with allegorical symbols on the small deck includes cups, wands, swords and stars. The Alchemical Tarot was inspired by these Tarot cards.
