Basic classification of Tarot cards

  1. Marseille Tarot
The Marseille Tarot comes from France and is also recognized as a standard 78-card Tarot structure, which is based on the specifications of the Marseille Tarot.

The Marseille Tarot is simple and plain in style. Its minor arcana number cards, like playing cards, have no story patterns. They simply draw the same number of cards as the card number. For example, the Four of Cups is basically expressed by drawing four cups. Although the Marseille card is simple in style, many scholars are still very interested in the study of the Marseille card. The famous psychology master Jung (C.G. Jung) believes that the Marseille Tarot contains the symbol of the human mind archetype. In addition, the Marseille card can be said to be more common in France than playing cards. At the end of the 15th century, the Marseille Tarot had already appeared. Now it is mostly used as a game card in the local area, and it is also very easy to buy.

  1. Waite Tarot
The deck was created by Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942), a famous member of the Golden Dawn Society, and Pamela Coleman Smith (Pamela Coleman Smith). This deck has the greatest influence on later generations and the largest circulation. There are three main reasons:
  2. The Minor Arcana number cards of Waite Tarot use specific story images to present the meaning of Minor Arcana, which is easy to understand and takes into account the connotation of mysticism.
  3. The author Waite wrote a book explaining the principles and divination of Tarot cards, titled . This book was issued with the deck, just like an instruction manual for Tarot.
  4. Waite Tarot was issued in 1910, all in English, so this deck has a very good sales in English-speaking countries.
  5. Thoth Tarot
Thoth Tarot was created by Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), a controversial mystic in modern times, in collaboration with Frieda Harris. It took five years to create this Egyptian-themed Tarot deck, which combines various mystical elements such as astrology, Kabbalah, I Ching, mythology, alchemy, magic, etc. Its painting style is unique and abstract, and the depth of content exceeds most previous Tarot cards. According to experience, most people who have used this deck believe that the spiritual function of this card is greater than the divination function, so Thoth cards are the most respected among those who use Tarot cards for spiritual practice.

However, I personally recommend that beginners use Waite Tarot or Marseille Tarot.
